Understanding the idea
Sustainable Development

What Sustainable Development Means
Sustainable development is commonly described as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It asks us to consider environmental, social, and economic effects together rather than in isolation.
Three Connected Dimensions
Decisions that seem purely economic often have environmental and social consequences, and the reverse is also true.
- Environmental protection
- Social well-being and inclusion
- Responsible economic opportunity
The Global Framework
The United Nations 2030 Agenda sets out 17 Sustainable Development Goals that provide a shared reference for governments, organizations, and communities. See our Resources page for links to official sources.
Everyday Relevance
Sustainable development is not only a matter for governments. It relates to how households use energy and water, how communities plan public spaces, and how young people learn about the environment.
